Bank of Åland awards a Nature Bonus to John Nurminen Foundation’s project in Riga

Bank of Åland grants annually a sizeable sum of money to projects that improve the status of the environment with concrete measures, or help preserve the nature. The funds accumulate through the bank’s nature accounts and Bank of Åland Eco Performance Fund. The annual sum to be awarded has grown significantly over the past few years.

This year the largest individual bonus, €55,000 was awarded to John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects. The bonus goes to a project that increases the efficiency of Riga wastewater treatment plant’s phosphorus removal processes. The estimated impact of the project is an annual reduction of circa 200 tonnesin the phosphorus load of the Gulf of Finland. This corresponds to one fifth of the annual phosphorus load from Finland into the Baltic Sea.

Bank of Åland supports nature projects with a sum that corresponds to 0.2 per cent of all deposits in the nature accounts of the bank. This year witnessed an all-time high sum to be allocated, a total of €126,000. The funds that have not yet been allocated to any project will be awarded later on.

Since the launch of the Nature Account in 1990s, a total of €968,000 has been granted to environmental projects.
