Euroclear Finland decided to join the effort to save the Baltic Sea by donating €25,000 to the Vantaanjoki gypsum treatment project, led by the John Nurminen Foundation.
‘To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Euroclear Group, we wanted to make a donation to two local non-profit organisations. We chose to donate to the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects because clean nature is something that touches us all, and protecting the Baltic Sea is an important issue also for future generations’, explains Hanna Vainio, Euroclear’s CEO.
In terms of blue-green algae, last summer was the worst we have seen in decades. The sea was doing poorly, with wide-spread algae blooms giving us a gloomy reminder of the fact that eutrophication continues to be the most significant environmental problem faced by the Baltic Sea.
The John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects combat eutrophication with concrete measures. Euroclear’s donation was made to the Vantaanjoki gypsum treatment project, led by the Foundation. In 2018-2020, the project will treat as much as 3,500 hectares of cultivated fields in the Vantaanjoki catchment area with gypsum. Treating fields with gypsum helps make the Vantaa River and the Baltic Sea cleaner, as gypsum decreases erosion, and immediately curbs eutrophication-inducing phosphorus loads from waterways.
‘We decided to target our donation to the Vantaanjoki gypsum project because the project will directly improve the ecological status and recreational value of our waterways. The fast and efficient impact of treating fields with gypsum has been proven with research, so the funds donated will bring results for Baltic Sea protection. It is great that we can do our share in promoting this most valuable cause’, says Vainio.
The Vantaanjoki gypsum treatment project will curb the phosphorus loads from agriculture by 10 tonnes in the span of five years. The support from Euroclear will fund the gypsum treatment of approximately 90 hectares of cultivated field.
