Fortum continues to support John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects

Fortum has signed an agreement of continued support to John Nurminen Foundation’s Baltic Sea projects. Fortum intends to support John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects with EUR 100,000 yearly between 2012 and 2015. The agreement continues the cooperation where the previous four-year support agreement left off at the end of 2011.

“Fortum’s operations have a large focus in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea and sustainable development is in the core of our strategy. This is why we want to support John Nurminen Foundation in its efforts to protect our common sea. Our cooperation supports our mission and our efforts in taking our social responsibility for our environment and for future generations” says Anne Brunila, Executive Vice President, Corporate Relations and Strategy, Fortum.

“The long-standing support of Fortum since 2006 has been integral in terms of continuity of our operations. We concluded a major project in Saint Petersburg last year and have ongoing Clean Baltic Sea projects across 17 cities in five different countries. The next step in the Tanker Safety project, which launched in 2009, will be the distribution of the ENSI® navigation service to approximately 100 tankers. Our strategy involves finding cost-effective actions that have a significant impact on the Baltic Sea across the entire catchment area. Therefore, we are also looking into new types of projects in addition to the current ones,” says Juha Nurminen, John Nurminen Foundation’s founder and Chairman of the Board.

John Nurminen Foundation, founded in 1992, protects the Baltic Sea along two fronts. The Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects aim to prevent eutrophication by substantially reducing the nutrient pollution that ends up in the Baltic Sea. The aim of the other part, the Foundation’s cooperative Tanker Safety project, is to significantly reduce the risk of oil spill in the Gulf of Finland by offering the new ENSI® navigation service for tankers in the area.
