Game on! Supercell to continue its support for John Nurminen Foundation

The mission of John Nurminen Foundation is to save the Baltic Sea and its cultural heritage. The foundation implements concrete Baltic Sea protection measures and ensures that the stories of the sea are passed on to future generations.

One of the most serious environmental problems faced by the relatively shallow and enclosed Baltic Sea is eutrophication, caused by the excessive phosphorus and nitrogen loads in the sea, and causing signs like blue-green algae blooms, cloudy waters, and oxygen-depleted seabed.

Protecting the Baltic Sea is a large-scale operation. Luckily, there are players like Supercell, the creator of video games like Hay Day and Clash of Clans, who are willing to share the load and really make a difference. Supercell has decided to carry on as one of the main partners of John Nurminen Foundation also in 2021, adding another year to a continuum launched already in 2014.

Doing environmental work is giving back

”Supporting the John Nurminen Foundation is one or our ways to contribute towards environmental sustainability” says Maria Facal, of Give Back, the philantropic program of Supercell. ”Clean water and preserving the Baltic Sea is very important to all of us “Supercellians”, and we appreciate the scalable and focused way John Nurminen Foundation works.”

According to Maria, while Supercell stays focused on their mission to create games that are played for years and remembered forever, they believe giving back to the community is an important aspect of engaging with players. Saving the Baltic Sea is not the only ecological initiative for Supercell. They have made a commitment to offsetting carbon emissions from their operations as well as those created by mobile devices of players while playing the games, and encouraged other games companies to follow them in the effort. Supercell is also part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and has featured environmental campaigns in some of their games, like the Play for Trees campaign in December 2020 in Hay Day.

Clear, measurable results

In 2005–2020, the John Nurminen Foundation has launched almost 40 Clean Baltic Sea projects, 30 of which have been completed. The impacts of these projects are visible. For example, in collaboration with other stakeholders, in less than 10 years the eutrophicating phosphorus load of the Gulf of Finland alone has been cut by up to 75 %.

The foundation is also an award-winning disseminator of information and producer of marine content, having published over 40 books and co-launched a Digital Museum initiative for the preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage.

The way forward

Supercell and John Nurminen Foundation share the belief that “with a lot of work and a little luck, our best days are ahead of us”, as said by Supercell CEO and co-founder Ilkka Paananen.

This mindset has been emblematic to the varied forms of collaboration between the game company and the foundation working together towards a cleaner Baltic Sea. For example, Supercell was, with its sizable donation, one of the major supporters of #OURSEA campaign launched in 2020. Their employees have worked pro bono for the foundation in many communications and fundraising initiatives, contributing their skills and ideas to the protection of the Baltic Sea.

“We are truly grateful and thrilled for the generosity of Supercell and all their lovely people” says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Ph.D., CEO of John Nurminen Foundation. “With their continued support, we can go on nurturing the maritime culture and well-being of our beloved sea. It’s a game we are going to win, with the help of friends!”
