Geberit sets up a recycling campaign for Baltic Sea protection

From 1 March to 31 May 2019, Geberit Oy organises a recycling event for the plastic protection plugs and pressing indicator protective plastics of Mapress and Mepla fittings, used in piping system installation. The goal is to raise €20,000 for Baltic Sea protection, and, at the same time, recycle and reuse 1,000 kg of plastic plugs.

As part of the campaign, HVAC wholesale suppliers such as Onninen, Dahl, and Ahsell will feature eye-catching recycling points, where contractors are encouraged to bring the protection plastics and plugs of fittings that are indispensable for water supply hygiene.

‘Through the choices we make, each and every one of us can have an impact on the wellbeing of nature. When we collect plastics for further use, it is an action that benefits future generations. Plastic has good qualities, and it is needed in our everyday lives. What is important to understand is the lifecycle of plastic, and the importance of recycling’, says Kim Lövkvist, managing director of Geberit Oy.

Funds raised by the plug collection campaign are directed to the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects. The projects reduce the nutrient load and environmental risks faced by the sea.

‘The John Nurminen Foundation’s work brings results that benefit the Baltic Sea, and this is the very reason why we selected the Foundation as the recipient of our donation. The more plugs are returned, the more money we will donate to the Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects. For each returned kilogram, we will donate €20 to marine protection’, explains Kati Laakso, marketing coordinator at Geberit.

The plastic plugs collected during the campaign are recyclable, and made of LDPE plastic. The plastics that are collected will be reused.

‘This collection campaign is a wonderful way to bring together many activities that help to save the Baltic Sea. In addition to Geberit and Geberit’s clients making a donation to our marine protection work, the campaign takes a wonderful stand on recycling as well’, extols Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation.

The Geberit Mapress and Mepla fittings feature LDPE plugs that protect the parts from dirt and dust prior to installation. The plug also protects the O-ring within the fitting.  The purpose of the plug is to make installations secure and hygienic. Campaign materials will also be made from recyclable materials.

‘We hope our customers will endorse our campaign and with it the idea that if you collect plastic, and make sure it is reused or treated as energy waste, it will not burden the environment’, says Laakso.
