Trade Fair Release 8 February 2013
The John Nurminen Foundation participates in the Helsinki International Boat Show at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre on 8.-17. February 2013. The Helsinki International Boat Show is the largest boating event in Northern Europe.

At its stand, the John Nurminen Foundation introduces its Clean Baltic Sea projects, i.e. projects for reducing phosphorus loads in the Baltic Sea catchment area, and the Tanker Safety joint project, which reduces the risk of oil accidents in the Gulf of Finland.

The target of the Foundation’s phosphorus removal projects, which combat eutrophication, is to reduce the annual phosphorus load entering the Baltic Sea by 2,500 tonnes of phosphorus by 2015. This equals one sixth of the target set by HELCOM for reducing the phosphorus load of the Baltic Sea. With the Foundation’s current projects, a reduction of approximately 2,100 tonnes of phosphorus can be achieved, so we are still 400 tonnes of phosphorus short of the target. The Tanker Safety project aims at deploying the new, forecasting ENSI service in all tankers sailing the Gulf of Finland by 2013.

New ways to participate in the Foundation’s efforts to save the Baltic Sea

The Foundation continues to raise funds so it can reach its targets. Steam has donated an SMS donation platform to the Foundation for the duration of one year. This new method of collecting funds in support of the Baltic Sea will be used first at the Boat Show. Another new fundraising method is the Clean Baltic Sea Concert, organised at the Helsinki Music Centre on 26 February. At the concert, organised by the Foundation, master conductor Valery Gergiev conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Emphasising the urgency of the work to save the Baltic Sea, Gergiev performs as a donation to the Foundation.

The Foundation is also involved in tours for groups of schoolchildren, coordinated by the Finnish Marine Industries Federation Finnboat, the Finnish Fair Corporation, and Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily (SPV, Finnish association for boating and sailing). At the Foundation’s stand in section 3e22, Miina Mäki, marine biologist, tells schoolchildren of the vulnerable ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, and of the means we have for protecting the sea.

Rare maps from the 16th century in Vallila fabrics

Marine history is also showcased at the Foundation’s stand. On display are a map of Scandinavia from 1593, engraved with extreme skill by Gerard de Jode, and a city map of Visby, the oldest city of Sweden, from the world’s first city atlas from the year 1598.

The 16th century maps are also prominent in the decoration of the stand, as Vallila Interior has introduced the same maps in its 2013 spring line. The maps will adorn ready-made curtains and pillow cases. Moreover, at the Foundation’s stand you have the opportunity to investigate an engine order telegraph, and browse the Foundation’s non-fiction publications on maritime history and culture. Jukka Nurminen’s photography on the underwater world beneath the surface of the Baltic Sea is also on display.

Stand of the John Nurminen Foundation at hall 3, 3e22.
