Juho Lipsanen and Markku Ollikainen appointed to the John Nurminen Foundation Board of Directors

The annual meeting of the Board of Directors decided on 27 February 2018 on the addition of two new members, Juho Lipsanen, M.Sc (Econ.) and Markku Ollikainen, Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of Helsinki.

Juho Lipsanen, M.Sc (Econ.) (b. 1961) served as the CEO and President of TeliaSonera Finland from 2005 to 2008 and as the CEO and President of Alma Media from 2002 to 2005. Prior to this, he was the CFO of ABB Automation and the Managing Director of ABB New Ventures Ltd in Switzerland. Lipsanen has served as e.g. Chairman of the Board of Vapo Oy, and he currently a Member of the Board in several cleantech sector companies (e.g. Satel Oy, Aidon Oy and Gasmet Oy).

Markku Ollikainen (b. 1952) has served as the Professor Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of Helsinki since 2000. His work is focused on researching and teaching how the market economy can be directed towards sustainable development. He has analysed issues related to the conservation of the Baltic Sea since the 1990s. Ollikainen is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and has held positions of trust in the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economics scientific association. He has served as an expert advisor for the Finnish government on two occasions. Ollikainen chairs the local-level panel on Baltic Sea issues established upon the initiative of the cities of Helsinki and Turku, and has served as the Chair of the Finnish Climate Panel since 2014.

In the same meeting, long-term Member of the Board Juhani Kaskeala stepped down from his position. Chairman of the Board Juha Nurminen thanked Juhani Kaskeala for his outstanding contribution to the work of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Juhani Kaskeala was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2000, when the activities of the Foundation were substantially smaller in scale. Juhani Kaskeala has extensively influenced the various projects carried out by the Foundation and has actively realized the purpose of the Foundation. It was noted that without the strong efforts, responsibility and commitment by Juhani Kaskeala, the Foundation could not have achieved its results in both cultural projects as well as the conservation of the Baltic Sea. A particular mention was made of his role as the chairman of the steering group for the oil spill prevention project Tanker Safety.

Current and continuing members of the Board of Directors are Eeva Ahdekivi D.Sc (Econ.), Juha Nurminen (Chairman), holder of the Finnish honorary title of merenkulkuneuvos, Kaisa Olkkonen LL.M, professor Per-Edvin Persson, Marja-Leena Rinkineva LL.M, Trained Judge (VT), eMBA, ambassador Veli Sundbäck, economist Hannu Syrjänen (Vice Chairman), and ambassador Pertti Torstila M.Soc.Sc.

Established in 1992, the objective of the John Nurminen Foundation is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The Foundation sponsors and publishes non-fiction works and brings maritime knowledge available to everyone through the free Loki web service. The Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects seek to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea with tangible measures that help reduce the load and environmental risks directed at the sea. The Clean Baltic Sea projects are funded by private donations and public funds.
