Pöyry’s risk assessment of Gdansk phosphogypsum stack contained an error – discharge risk still significant

Consultancy and engineering company Pöyry, which assessed phosphorus discharge risk from the Gdansk phosphogypsum stack on the assignment of the John Nurminen Foundation, has informed that the original risk estimate contained an error. According to the new, corrected estimate of Pöyry, discharge risk is around one third of the original estimate, slightly less than 200 tons of phosphorus per year. Pöyry’s new estimate is in line with the earlier risk estimate made by the Finnish Environment Institute. Discharge risk is still significant, and Pöyry therefore recommends that the phosphogypsum stack should be properly isolated and drainage waters purified.
