Protecting the Baltic Sea with clean energy – A donation from Kotimaan Energia will reduce the amount of blue-green algae by 200,000 kg

Kotimaan Energia, alongside its customers buying green electricity, will donate 40,000 euros to the John Nurminen Foundation. The donation is included in the company’s solar energy and green choice power contracts. This year, the power contracts will help remove up to 200,000 kilograms of blue-green algae from the Baltic Sea.

Even a five-euro donation is enough to improve the state of the Baltic Sea. This donation can help remove 25 kg of blue-green algae. In the long run, donations by the customers of Kotimaan Energia will help improve the state of the Baltic Sea.

“Eutrophication is still the most widescale environmental problem at the Baltic Sea. Its most visible and harmful consequence for us, the habitants of the Baltic Sea area, are the blue-green algal blooms every summer. The amount of blue-green algae will reduce when we cut down the amount of nutrients released into the sea. The support from Kotimaan Energia is valuable in our efforts to save the Baltic Sea and to ensure clean and clear water for all of us to swim in,” says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation.

When the customers of Kotimaan Energia buy hydropower, solar power or wind power, they are engaged in supporting the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects through their additional service.  Every year, Kotimaan Energia donates five euros for every solar energy and green choice power contract to the John Nurminen Foundation’s projects that protect the Baltic Sea. This year, the company collected more than 40,000 euros for donations.

Kotimaan Energia’s goal is to support the use of renewable energy and sustainable development. The company wants to thank all of its customers for supporting green values.

“We chose the John Nurminen Foundation as our partner because the foundation’s projects have been cost-effective and introduced tangible results inside a short period of time,” says Kiti Ryytty, Product Manager at Kotimaan Energia.

Responsible choices have a visible role among Kotimaan Energia’s products. They are at the core of the company’s activities.

“People’s interest in responsible choices and environmental values is constantly growing. For example, the popularity of the green choice service has grown significantly in the past years. People are willing to pay a little extra for electricity that has been produced ecologically,” says Ryytty.

The green choice electricity comes from 25% wind power, 25% solar power and 50% Norwegian Guarantee of Origin certified hydropower. The hydropower can be traced back all the way to the power plant to ensure that the hydropower has been produced in migratory fish-friendly power plants.

Kotimaan Energia is a nationwide independent electricity company that offers electricity at a compatible price. Kotimaan Energia also offers 100% origin-guaranteed renewable energy that is a combination of hydropower, wind power and solar power. We also collaborate with the John Nurminen Foundation that successfully works towards cleaning the Baltic Sea.

Founded in 1992, the mission of the John Nurminen Foundation is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage to future generations. The goal of the foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects is to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea with tangible measures that will reduce the load and environmental risks directed at the sea. The Clean Baltic Sea projects are funded by private donations and public funds. www.johnnurmisensaatio.fi
