Six metres to go: the Horizon grows in length

On Monday, 19th October, 338 new name plates or gleams were installed to the Horizon work of art, located at the Jätkäsaari pier in Helsinki. This was the eighth batch of installed gleams, and as a result, the work grew by four metres. The work is nearing its completion and full length of 54 metres. The remaining 6 metres, or 508 gleams, will be installed when all the campaign donations have been made. The full length of the work corresponds to the average depth of the Baltic Sea. Hannu Kähönen, the designer of the piece, wanted this to remind everyone who walks by of the fragility of the shallow sea.

When complete, the work will include 4,225 gleams: currently (status of 21 October 2015), there are still 352 remaining. You can purchase a gleam for yourself or gift it with a donation of €50. The work of art, owned by the city of Helsinki, is a permanent installation, which means that you can still become a part of a work of art and immortalize your name or the name of a friend alongside other protectors of the Baltic Sea! The full net profit of the piece of at will be used to finance the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects, which reduce the external nutrient load of the sea and consequently reduce eutrophication. The profits have already been used to acquire, for example, a chemicals container for the wastewater treatment plant of Gatchina, to be used in chemical phosphorus removal.

Hint: a gleam with a name inscribed makes a great Father’s Day or Christmas gift!
