Steam is a key supporter of the John Nurminen Foundation Clean Baltic Sea projects in 2013

Steam and the John Nurminen Foundation have agreed to engage in comprehensive cooperation in 2013. The monetary support Steam provides to the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects is based on the SMS messages sent from Steam’s system. Steam will forward a share of its revenue from every SMS sent in 2013 to the Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects. Last year, the support totalled at over €12,000: this sum is also the target for the current year. In addition to monetary support, Steam provides an SMS-based fundraising service to the Foundation for free. With the agreement, Steam becomes one of the key supporters of the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects.

As a result of the cooperation, the support provided by Steam in 2013 has more concrete and clearly defined goals and targets, which, in turn, have measurable results. ‘The operating principles of the Foundation, which generate demonstrable results in the area of phosphorus loads, for example, have thoroughly convinced me. Our cooperation implements the values of Steam in the best imaginable way, as our customers receive concrete proof of operations that benefit the environment’, explains Tero Kalsta, CEO of Steam.

Erik Båsk, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation, adds: ‘Steam’s SMS donation is an excellent example of a business operation where small streams converge into a mighty river – with volume enough to support charitable causes. We are also very happy to be able to introduce SMS donations as a fundraising method. It is a tool we have not used previously, but thanks to Steam’s donation, we have the opportunity to test this option in our 2013 campaigns and fundraising.’

The Clean Baltic Sea projects of the John Nurminen Foundation focus on two areas of operation: reducing the annual nutrient load, and consequently eutrophication, of the Baltic Sea, and the marked reduction of the risk of oil spill accidents in the Gulf of Finland. The Foundation’s Phosphorus Removal projects work to combat eutrophication and aim at reducing the phosphorus load entering the Baltic Sea by 2,500 tonnes by the year 2015. Through planning, equipment investment and training, the projects focus on improving the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants in cities. By 2015, the funds we have accrued and financed our projects with will result in the reduction of approximately 2,100 tonnes of phosphorus in 17 cities and five countries.

The Tanker Safety project, which aims at preventing tanker accidents, will improve the safety of marine traffic with the new ENSI navigation service. The project is implemented in close cooperation with the Finnish Transport Agency. Thanks to the project, vessel route plans will be available to marine traffic control, and vessels will also receive information in electronic format. The ENSI service will be deployed in the Gulf of Finland during 2013.

The Clean Baltic Sea projects of the John Nurminen Foundation improve the status of the Baltic Sea. The target of the Foundation’s Clean Sea projects is to combat eutrophication and reduce annual phosphorus loads by 2,500 tonnes by the year 2015. The Tanker Safety project aims at reducing the risk of oil spills with the introduction, to be implemented in 2013, of the new, enhanced navigation support information system ENSI for all tankers sailing the Baltic Sea. The Foundation finances its operations with private donations and public funding.
