The John Nurminen Foundation will receive a significant donation from Partioaitta

The John Nurminen Foundation will receive a significant donation for its Clean Baltic Sea work thanks to Partioaitta selecting it as one of the recipients of the Ympäristöbonus environment bonus in 2019. The sum of the donation will accumulate during 2019, and it will be divided between the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation, the John Nurminen Foundation and the Ympäristökasvatusjärjestö FEE ry.

The John Nurminen Foundation has been selected as one of the recipients of Partioaitta’s Ympäristöbonus environment bonus in 2019. Partioaitta’s Ympäristöbonus is distributed annually, and it is donated for the protection of the Finnish nature and support of outdoor exercise. The donation is accumulated through purchases made via Partioaitta’s customer loyalty programme, 365-klubi; Partioaitta donates 1% of the value of the purchases annually through the Ympäristöbonus. The final sum of the donation will be determined at the end of the year.

The John Nurminen Foundation will allocate the entire sum to the work on the Clean Baltic Sea project. The foundation’s objective is to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea clearly by reducing the amount of nutrients that end up in the sea. In order to reach the goal, the foundation’s projects reduce nutrient emissions from cities, the industry and the agriculture, among other things, throughout the whole catchment area of the Baltic Sea.

“With the donation, we can fish roach or carry out gypsum treatments in more fields in the Vantaanjoki catchment area, for instance. Gypsum treatments on fields help to make the Vantaanjoki river and the Baltic Sea cleaner, because gypsum reduces erosion and immediately reduces the phosphorus load that causes eutrophication of the waters. Sustainable roach fishing also protects the Baltic Sea, because nutrients causing eutrophication of the sea are also removed from the waters with the catch,” says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation.

Partioaitta specialises in the retail of outdoor and hiking equipment; it makes an annual donation to protect the Finnish nature and support outdoor exercise. In 2018, EUR 101,000 was donated as the Ympäristöbonus environment bonus; then Virtavesien hoitoyhdistys Virho ry, the Go Out With the Elderly campaign of the Age Institute, as well as the Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association. In previous years, the Ympäristöbonus funds have been used for purposes such as building new stairs to the top of the Kiilopää fell in the Urho Kekkonen National Park, supporting outdoor exercise for children and young people, and cleaning and renovating beaches both in Lake Saimaa as well as the Archipelago Sea.
