The Mapmakers’ World selected as nominee for the Finlandia Literary Prize for the best non-fiction book

“The creation of a world view is a great and exciting story.”

The Mapmakers’ World – a Cultural History of the European World Map, published in September by the John Nurminen Foundation, has been selected as a nominee for the Finlandia Literary Prize for the best non-fiction book. Altogether six books are competing for the award.

Comments of the selection jury says as follows,

The Mapmakers’ World travels through time, taking its readers to the core of European culture. Through map research, the authors have delved into the history of religion, commerce, art, seafaring and power politics, spanning a period of 1,000 years from the Early Middle Ages to the Enlightenment.The result is a work of magnificent beauty and enduring depth. The creation of a world view is a great and exciting story. The book, written by Marjo T. Nurminen with Juha Nurminen as editor-in-chief, takes its readers to treasures the likes of which they could never experience elsewhere.”

The Finlandia Literary Prize for Non-Fiction, established in 1989, is awarded by the Finnish Book Foundation in recognition of the best Finnish work of non-fiction or textbook. The award sum is 30,000 euros.
