Otava Learning joins the #OURSEA campaign

In 2020, schools can use the Pelastetaan Itämeri (let’s save the Baltic Sea) educational content set created by Otava Learning free of charge; the set is available in Finnish and Swedish.

The goal of the #OURSEA charity campaign, created by Moomin Characters and the John Nurminen Foundation, is to increase awareness on the status of the Baltic Sea, and to collect funds for the John Nurminen Foundation’s work to save the sea and its heritage. The international campaign is joined by partners from all walks of life.

Otava participates by donating the Pelastetaan Itämeri educational content set, created by experts, for the use of schools.

“We want to join the work to secure the future of the Baltic Sea and its valuable cultural heritage. Our goal is to encourage children and youth to act on behalf of the Baltic Sea. Our target group is students in classes 3 to 9, but the materials can also be adapted for use with younger classes and in general upper secondary school”, explains Teuvo Sankila, Publishing Director at Otava Learning.

“Work at schools is of key importance when we tell the story of the Baltic Sea, and solve the challenges of its protection. This is why we are extremely glad of the cooperation with Otava and Moomin Characters – this is a route we can take to reach and inspire new champions for the Baltic Sea”, says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation.

The Baltic Sea was a very important source of inspiration to Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomins. 2020 will see the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first Moomin story, i.e. the Moomins and the Great Flood, which takes place in the setting of a natural disaster.
