Outdoor retailer Outnorth donates 10 000 euros to help the Baltic Sea

Outnorth AB, the leading outdoor online retailer in the Nordic countries, acknowledges its responsibility to operate as sustainably as possible so that the great outdoors can be enjoyed in the future. As one of their actions towards a better environment, Outnorth donates 10 000 euros to the Clean Baltic Sea projects of the John Nurminen Foundation. Outnorth donates via Urberg brand, which is a member of the 1% for the Planet network.

The wellbeing of the sea and climate are important for both Outnorth and the foundation – the health of the environment is essential for enjoying the sea and brisk outdoor life. “The vastest problem of the Baltic Sea is eutrophication, which is harmful to both the marine ecosystem and recreational use of the waters. In the Clean Baltic Sea Projects of John Nurminen Foundation, we reduce the amount of the eutrophicating nutrients in the Baltic Sea. It is wonderful to get support for the large-scale sea protection work we do”, says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, CEO of John Nurminen Foundation.

The effects of climate change further accelerate the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. According to forecasts, increasing rainfall and winters with only light snow will increase nutrient runoff from land to the Baltic Sea. As the climate heats up, seawater, too, will become warmer, boosting algae growth in the sea.

In addition to supporting the Baltic Sea work of John Nurminen Foundation, Outnorth has set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become completely climate-neutral in the long term. Among other steps in their sustainability work, Outnorth aims to reduce the use of harmful chemicals and plastic and require social sustainability from their subcontractors to ensure proper working conditions and animal welfare.

“As the leading Outdoor online retailer in the Nordic countries, Outnorth wants to support organizations that can help us protect our great outdoors. Both our company and our customers love nature and the endless possibilities for recreation and adventure she offers. We are all concerned about the stress that our way of living has put on the planet and are very pleased to support the John Nurminen Foundation in the efforts to save the Baltic Sea. The donation is done within 1% for the Planet, that Outnorth’s brand Urberg has joined since many years”, says Sustainability Manager Stefan Gustafsson.
